A Virtual Lifeless Earth Will Help Scientists Find Life on Exoplanets

This artist's illustration shows an Earth-like rocky planet with an atmosphere. Scientists at the University of Washington created a virtual Earth that realistically models how chemicals are exchanged between the planet's atmosphere, surface, crust, mantle, and core. The model can help astronomers study real exoplanets and determine whether their atmospheres show evidence of alien life, rather than just being potentially habitable. Image Credit: 852278-MCS. Researchers have created a model lifeless Earth that couples the atmosphere with interior planetary processes. The model can reproduce Earth's modern habitable state without including life, showing that a planet that appears habitable isn't necessarily inhabited. The tool will be useful when and if the Habitable Worlds Observatory is launched, by helping identify false positives.
