This Ancient Meteorite Hints at Mars' Warm, Wet Past

This image shows a group of meteorite hunters in the Sahara Desert. Nomadic people from the region have become expert meteorite hunters, finding hundreds of them, which are typically recovered as groups of fragments. One found in Mali in 2022 has proven to be almost as old as Mars itself, one of the most ancient pieces of Mars ever recovered. Image Credit: University of New Mexico.

Ancient Martian meteorites are like time-capsules from the planet's past. They're delivered to us by impacts that launch them into space, where some of them find their way to Earth. One recently discovered meteorite found in the Sahara desert adds weight to the idea that Mars was once warm and wet, and possibly habitable.
