Massive Exoplanets Could Form Around Supermassive Black Holes

This artist's illustration shows an active galactic nuclei with accretion disk and jets. New research says that under specific disk conditions, giant planets could form in the outer regions of the disk. So could black holes, including the elusive intermediate mass black holes. Image Credit: JAXA.

Black holes aren't just engines of inexorable destruction. They're complex regions of space and time, and under the right conditions, giant planets can form in their AGN disks.
