This Ancient Star In A Low-Mass Galaxy Is A Precious Find

This image shows stars in Pictor II, an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy. It's an ancient galaxy, more than 10 billion years old. One of the stars is named PicII-503, and it's a Population II star, known for their low metallicities. To understand the Universe we see around us today, we have to understand its past. Some hard-to-find ancient stars, called Population II stars, preserve evidence from the ancient Universe. Astronomers finally found one.
